What an AI story generator actually does
The phrase makes it sound like one button. In practice a good children's story generator runs several passes. First it takes what you typed and checks it is a suitable subject for a child. Then it plans a story with a beginning, a problem and a resolution, rather than producing text that simply keeps going. Then it writes the pages at a reading level matched to the age on the profile.
Only then does the picture work start. Each page gets its own illustration, drawn to match that page's moment, with the same child recognisably the same across every page — which is harder than it sounds and is where most tools visibly fail. Finally the whole thing is read aloud in a narration track your child can follow along with.
The difference between tools is almost never the writing. It is whether the pictures match the words, whether the child looks like the same person on page six as on page one, and whether anything checked the story before a child saw it.
How to write a prompt that gets a good story
Short and concrete beats long and elaborate. "Diwali at grandmother's house" produces a better story than three sentences of instructions, because the engine already knows your child's name, age and interests — you are only supplying the situation.
Name one place, one object or one situation you want in it. If you ask for a lesson as well as a plot as well as three characters, the story spends its length servicing your list instead of going anywhere.
If your child is old enough, let them type it. The prompt is the most creative part of the process, and handing it over changes the activity from something done for them into something they made.
What makes a story generator safe for a child
Ask three questions of any tool you are considering. Is the input checked before anything is written? Is the picture checked before the child sees it? And can a child talk to it freely, or only within a structure?

What AI story generators still get wrong
It is worth being honest about the limits, because the category has a reputation problem and much of it is deserved. Image models garble written words, so any lettering drawn inside a picture tends to come out as nonsense — we ban text in illustrations for that reason rather than pretending it works.
Counting is the other weak point. Ask for a picture of six apples and you may get five. Where a story teaches a quantity, the number belongs in the words and in the app-drawn diagram, not in the artwork.
